How to Maintain Mulch Beds Throughout the Year
Fresh mulch looks perfect for about a month. Then weeds test the edges, summer storms shift the layer, and by fall the beds look tired again. The fix is not more mulch — it is a light routine through the season.
Monthly: the 15-minute walk
Once a month, walk every bed with a hand weeder. Pull weeds while they are small — five minutes now beats an hour in September. Push displaced mulch back into thin spots and re-cut any edge that has blurred.
After storms: check and fluff
Heavy rain compacts mulch and washes it into low spots. A quick rake-through restores the texture and evens the depth. Redirect any mulch that washed onto walkways.
Late summer: the honest assessment
By August, decide: does the bed need a light top-up (half inch) to carry it through fall, or is it fine until spring? Most beds need nothing — resist the urge to bury them.
Fall: tuck beds in
Clear fallen leaves off mulch before they mat (a blower on low works), and add a light inch only where the layer has clearly thinned.
Year-round checklist
- Monthly weed walk (15 minutes)
- Re-cut blurred edges as needed
- Rake and redistribute after heavy rain
- Top up lightly only where thin — never bury
- Keep mulch off trunks and siding, always
