How to Refresh Your Landscape on a Budget
You do not need a landscape architect to transform a tired yard. After years of Bergen County jobs, here is our honest ranking of upgrades by visible impact per dollar — the same advice we give friends.
1. Edge everything (free–cheap)
A sharp spade-cut edge around every bed instantly makes the whole property look intentional. Cost: an afternoon, or a modest add-on to any bed service.
2. Fresh mulch ($$)
The single best curb-appeal dollar. Two inches of fresh mulch over cleaned, edged beds changes the entire front of the house.
3. Prune what you have ($$)
Overgrown foundation shrubs make the whole house look neglected. Selective pruning — or a professional visit — reveals the architecture underneath.
4. Full cleanup ($$)
Leaves, sticks, matted debris: a thorough spring or fall cleanup resets the canvas so everything else shows better.
5. Spot sod ($$$)
For the worst bare patches only. A few rolls of sod in the highest-visibility dead spots beats a full lawn renovation on a budget.
Budget checklist
- Start with edging — biggest free win
- Mulch next — best paid win
- Prune before you plant anything new
- Clean up before you judge the yard
- Sod only the spots everyone sees
