When Is the Best Time to Mulch in New Jersey?

In Bergen County, the mulching trucks start rolling in April — but the best time to mulch is not the earliest time. For most properties, late April through May is the sweet spot, after the soil has warmed and spring bulbs have finished their show.

Why late spring wins

Mulch insulates soil. Spread it too early, while the ground is still cold, and you slow the warm-up that perennials and shrubs need to break dormancy. Wait until soil temperatures are consistently above 55°F — usually late April in our part of New Jersey — and the mulch locks in warmth instead of blocking it.

What about fall mulching?

A lighter fall top-up has real value: it insulates roots before freeze-thaw cycles and gives beds a tidy look through winter. Keep it to an inch or so over the existing layer rather than a full fresh application.

Timing mistakes to avoid

  • Mulching over matted leaves. Clear debris first or you trap moisture and disease.
  • Piling against trunks. The infamous “mulch volcano” rots bark — keep mulch 3 inches from stems.
  • Going over 3 inches total. Deep mulch suffocates roots and invites rodents.

Your spring mulching checklist

  • Cut back perennials and clear winter debris
  • Re-cut bed edges for a crisp line
  • Pull weeds before mulching, not after
  • Apply 2–3 inches, kept off trunks and siding
  • Water beds lightly to settle the mulch
